I remember nearly spitting out my coffee a few years ago when I learned Robert Plant and Alison Krauss had collaborated on “Raising Sand,” an album that went on to win five Grammy Awards, including album of the year, in 2009.
Now comes along an equally surprising pairing: Norah Jones and Billie Joe Armstrong, the front man for Green Day, teaming up for a re-do of a dozen songs by the legendary Everly Brothers. Who would have imagined such an unlikely duo? And who would have imagined they would sound so good doing country-folk-pop songs popularized in the late ’50s and early ’60s?
I listened to the album for the first time just after the new year began and was blown away by their take on the Everlys’ music. You can hear “Foreverly” in its entirety here — or listen to an interview with the artists on NPR.
I’m thinking Norah and Billie Joe might walk away with a few Grammys themselves for this album. What a sweet tribute that would be to Phil Everly, who died Jan. 3 at age 74, and his surviving brother Don, now 76.
